Jay Varellas: "Law and Political Economy"

Guest lecture
Wann 13.07.2018 von 18:15 bis 20:00 (Europe/Vienna / UTC200) iCal
Wo Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Faculty of Law, Unter den Linden 9, Room 210

The study group "Critical Inquiries in Law, Politics and Philosophy" will host Jay Varellas, JD, a political economist and legal scholar from Berkeley, who will introduce the nascent academic movement of "Law and Political Economy". Drawing some inspiration from Grewal's and Purdy's article "Law and Neoliberalism", we will discuss the main characteristics of the new scholarly current, its renewed critical approach to the function of Law, its opposition to the efficiency-oriented Law and Economics, and its aspiration to an egalitarian and democratic society. We will also try to draw parallels with the European context, including topics such as austerity politics and the potential of socio-economic rights.

The discussion will be held in the informal format of the study group and everyone is welcome to join, ask questions, comment, and participate. The event will be held in English.
