Conversations with Judges: Can Courts Protect Democracy?
When democracies tumble, or die, what is the role of courts? What are promising judicial strategies, resilient doctrines, and helpful remedies?
Upcoming Events
Monday, April 28: András Sajó, Hungary, Ex-ECHR
Monday, May 26: Daphne Barak-Erez (online), Supreme Court of Israel
The LSI has been subjected to harsh criticism regarding the event with Judge Barak-Erez from the Supreme Court of Israel on May 26, 2025. An open letter was sent to us as organizers a few hours before the event, but there was no effort to address and discuss worries beforehand, thus no discussion, and the letter was published online. Here, we set aside its statement of "facts", some of which are inaccessible, seem false or distorted. However, some background information to allow for a more nuanced understanding of this has been provided, and to start or continue conversations rather than cut them off. A call to "stop taking up space within Law and Society discussions" is not productive, while an appeal to "rethink" and "consider" is, and is heard and acted upon.
Thursday, June 19: Mansoor Ali Shah, Supreme Court of Pakistan
Monday, June 23: Daniela Salazar Marín, Ex Constitutional Court of Ecuador
Monday, June 30: Natalia Ángel Cabo, Constitutional Court of Colombia
Thursday, July 10: Tamara Perišin, CJEU
Location: HS 2091, Humbolt Universität zu Berlin Unter den Linden 6 from 6 – 8pm
