Georgios Ziogas





(Re)claiming the Personality Right at End of Life in light of paradigmatic euthanasia and assisted suicide cases in Europe




Georgios Ziogas is a jurist specialising in human rights and equality law and philosophy of law. He completed his undergraduate studies in Greek law and thus, obtained a Ptychio in law (civil law counterpart to the common law LLB degree) at the Faculty of Law of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and furthered his legal education on human rights law, comparative equality law, jurisprudence and political theory and international law of the sea during his Magister Juris postgraduate studies (Oxford University counterpart to the commonly known as 'LLM' studies) at the Faculty of Law of the University of Oxford. From September 2018 until January 2019 he implemented his expertise and enriched it with practical insights in the context of his traineeship at the European Court of Human Rights which was conducted under the supervision of the Romanian judge. As of October 2019, he has initiated his doctoral studies as a PhD student of the German Research Foundation graduate school Dynamische Integrationsordnung - Europa und sein Recht zwischen Harmonisierung und Pluralisierung (DynamInt) at the Faculty of Law of the Humboldt Universität zu Berlin.


Throughout the course of his academic studies, Mr. Ziogas has been awarded scholarships and grants by the ''Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD)'', the Greek ''Foundation for Education and European Culture'' and within the confines of the ''Oxford Global Justice Internship Programme''.


Mr. Ziogas' views on international affairs raising human rights and equality law issues, concomitant ethical questions and the impact of theory on the practice of human rights have been informed by his voluntary contribution to a freedom of speech research project of the ''Oxford Pro Bono Publico (OPBP)'' organisation (Oxford, 2018), his participation in the Greek and final international rounds of the ''Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition'' (Athens 2013; Washington 2014), in the Paris International Model United Nations (PIMUN)'' (Paris, 2012) and in journalistic initiatives of the ''Law Students Association'' of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Thessaloniki, 2012-2013). Alongside his intellectual work on human rights law, Mr. Ziogas has been engaging with the realisation in practice of equality and social justice initiatives in Greece as a ''Humanity in Action'' Fellow (Copenhagen, 2019; Greece, thenceforth) and contributed in the past to the physical preservation of cultural heritage sites within the context of a ''European Voluntary Service'' programme (St Petersburg, 2014).
