Guest Lecture "White Evangelical Populism - How Did We Get Here?: History, Religion, Economics, and 'Culture Wars'" by Marcia Pally

This presentation will offer a minimal definition of populism and trace the white American evangelical experience through each step - from religious and political history to current socio-economics and "culture wars" - to better understand current politics and their electoral effects.

 

Marcia Pally.jpgProfessor Marcia Pally teaches at New York University and held the Mercator Professorship in the Theology Faculty of Humboldt University, Berlin, where she is now an annual guest professor and member of the Center for Interreligious Theology and Religious Studies and the Berlin Institute for Public Theology. In 2019-2020 she was a Fellow at The Center for Theological Inquiry (Princeton) and was was twice a Fellow at the WIKO in Berlin. Her most recent books are; White Evangelicals and Right-wing Populism: How Did We Get Here?; From This Broken Hill I Sing to You: God, Sex, and Politics in the Work of Leonard Cohen; Commonwealth and Covenant: Economics, Politics, and Theologies of Relationality; America’s New Evangelicals: Expanding the vision of the common good. Commonwealth and Covenant was selected by the United Nations Committee on Education for Justice for worldwide distribution and was nominated for a Grawemeyer Award.
