Causal relationship plays a central role in science; discerning cause and effect is the bedrock of scientific inquiry. How does a change in one feature of the world cause a change in some other feature of the world? And while causality has to some extent permeated law (think of civil liability), legal science has remained pretty resistant to causal inference. In the lecture, we will firstly define and rigidly conceptualise causal relationships and causal inference. Afterwards, we will discuss its relevance and potential for legal science specifically.

Štěpán Paulík is a Docotral Researcher at Humboldt Universität zu Berlin. He holds a DAAD scholarship from the  Graduate School Scholarship Programme (GSSP). He is currently working on his project "Using Novel Quantitative Methods in Legal Science: Making Use of the Czech Apex Courts Dataset".
