Willkommen in Berlin, Class of 2025!

Looking back on the introduction week of our newest IDR LL.M. batch, and forward to an exciting academic year!

The eagerly anticipated Class of 2025 was warmly welcomed to Berlin by a host of alumni, lecturers, and distinguished guests during their first week of classes here at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.

Dispute Resolution x Germany: Kicking off the introduction week Prof. Gerhard Wagner, LL.M. (Chicago), Academic Director of the IDR LL.M. Program held a warm welcome address familiarizing the students with the German legal system. Keeping in line with the theme, this address was followed by a reception with traditional German food and drinks. Moreover, Deborah Keller and Dr. Tom Christopher Pröstler received the class on the following day at CMS Hasche Sigle and spoke on the various dispute resolution opportunities in the German legal market.

From 0 to 100: The introduction week held several crash courses on select subjects of the LL.M program, giving students a preview of what the academic year will entail. uzhan Samanci, PhD Candidate at HU Berlin, introduced the European Union and its legal system. Alicja Zielinska-Eisen, LL.M. (HU), presented commercial arbitration, and Petrit Elshani, LL.M. (HU), gave an overview of international investment law and arbitration.

Why, how, when, and where? To answer all of the lingering questions that a new Berliner might have, Dr. Philipp Wagner, LL.M. (Emory), welcomed the class to the offices of WAGNER Arbitration and explained why lawyers may move to Berlin and how to utilise ones’ LL.M. Subsequently, the class had a wonderful snack-off where delicious snacks from everyone’s home jurisdiction were shared amongst each other. Müge Bakırcıoğlu, LL.M. (HU) & Axel Benjamin Herzberg, LL.M. (London) also imparted valuable advice on how to find one’s footing in the world of commercial international dispute resolution.

A fun faculty free online Q&A with the class and alumni moderated by Isabela Godoy, LL.M. (HU) made for a relaxing and entertaining conclusion where students were able to discuss anything on their mind in a safe setting.

Finally, for this year’s opening lecture, the IDR LL.M will be honoured to host Niuscha Bassiri, Co-Founder of ArbBoutique on Tuesday, 22. October. Niuscha Bassiri is a leading figure in international arbitration, and the topic of her lecture “Settlement Facilitation in International Arbitration,” is ripe with thought-provoking and fascinating questions.
