The IDR LL.M. Program is lead by Professor Dr. Gerhard Wagner, LL.M. (Chicago), one of the most prominent German arbitration experts in academia, Chair of Private Law, Business Law, and Economic Analysis of Law at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and member of the board of the German Arbitration Institute (DIS).

Gerhard Wagner

Prof. Dr. Gerhard Wagner has held the position of Professor of Private Law, Business Law, and Economic Analysis of Law at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin since 2013. He is the founder of the IDR LL.M. program.

Before joining the Law Faculty of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Wagner served as Executive Director of the Institute of Civil Procedure and Dispute Resolution at the University of Bonn. In 2003, he was a Visiting Fellow at University College in London, UK. During 2010-2011, he was Visiting Professor of Law at the University of Chicago Law School, Chicago, IL. From 2009 through 2014 he also served as Professor of Fundamentals of Private Law at Erasmus University, Rotterdam, Netherlands. From 2008 through 2011 he was Honorary Professor of Law at Renmin University School of Law, Beijing, China.

Prof. Dr. Wagner is member of the Zivilrechtslehrervereinigung (Private Law Teachers’ Association), member of the European Law Institute, and a corresponding member of North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences, Humanities and the Arts. From 2012-2021 he was Board Member of the German Institution of Arbitration (DIS). In 2013, Wagner was awarded the Prize of the Academy of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities. Since 2015, he has served as an External Academic Member of the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law in Hamburg.

Prof. Dr. Wagner has published widely in the fields of contracts, torts, litigation and arbitration.

 

Academic Coordinator, Filippo Furlano, LL.M. (Humboldt)

Filippo is an Ontario-qualified lawyer (Canada) and works as an Academic  Coordinator for the International Dispute Resolution (IDR) LL.M. at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.

Filippo is a member of the 2023 graduating class of the IDR LL.M. During his time in Berlin, he has gained experience in the field of international investment dispute settlement, through his work on International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) arbitration cases.

Prior to moving to Germany, Filippo worked for the Office of the Ombudsman of Ontario, where he addressed a wide range of concerns made by members of the public against government bodies. As a lawyer in his home province, he also practised in the fields of real estate, business, and commercial law.

In addition to the IDR LL.M., Filippo holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from McGill University (Canada), a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Leicester (United Kingdom), and in 2018, he was called to the Bar of Ontario (Canada).

 

Academic Coordinator, Pablo Ortega, LL.M. (Humboldt)

Pablo is a Chilean-qualified lawyer and currently serves as an Academic Coordinator for the International Dispute Resolution (IDR) LL.M. at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.

A 2023 graduate of the IDR LL.M. program at Humboldt,

Pablo gained practical expertise in dispute resolution and arbitration as a visiting professional at a Berlin-based law firm specializing in international arbitration.

Prior to relocating to Germany, Pablo worked as an associate lawyer at a leading law firm in Santiago, Chile, where he represented clients in a broad range of legal disputes, with a focus on civil and labour law litigation.

In addition to his LL.M., Pablo holds a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from the University of Chile and has earned a Certificate of Advanced Study and Training in Negotiation and Mediation from Tulane University School of Law.

 

Program Coordinator and Student Research Assistant, Wareesha Hussain

Wareesha is a second year law student at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. She has been actively involved with GrundGesetzVerstehen e.V. since 2024, where she contributes to public relations and education, helping promote political literacy and civic engagement. In this role, she collaborates on the development of educational materials and outreach strategies to engage diverse audiences in understanding constitutional principles.
