Proposals for the Future of the EMU

There are many different proposals regarding the future of the European Economic and Monetary Union. To foster a discussion of those concepts, we provide an overview of existing proposals.

"Sorbonne speech"

In his speech Emmanuel Macron lays out his plan for the future of the European, providing an ambitious and detailed reform agenda. He calls for greater harmonization in key policy areas and raises the prospect that the UK could rejoin a reformed bloc.

"Revue de l'euro"

In celebration for the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Rome Treaties, the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Maastricht Treaty and 30 years since the launch of the ECU/EURO journal, the "Revue de l'euro" tries to provide a journal dedicated specifally with the EMU.

The journal publishes papers in French and English in a peer-review process on a half-year basis.

"Reflection paper on the deepening of the economic and monetary union"

The options proposed in the reflection paper are intended to help build a broad consensus on how to take on the challenges ahead and to give a fresh impetus to this important debate.

Moving ahead would involve taking steps in three key areas:

  • Completing a genuine Financial Union
  • Achieving a more integrated Economic and Fiscal Union
  • Anchoring democratic accountability and strengthening euro area institutions
