The global threats to liberal democracy are increasing. Disinformation poses a serious challenge to democratic processes and discourse. How can the state and civil society effectively counter this challenge? Dr. Anna Lührmann, Minister of State for Europe and Climate at the Federal Foreign Office, reports on European and national strategies against disinformation.
Anna Lührmann studied political science at the University of Hagen and completed a Master's degree in “Gender and Peace Studies” at Ahfad University in Sudan from 2009 to 2011. Subsequently, she worked for the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), from 2010 to 2011 in the field of election and parliamentary consulting in Sudan, and from 2011 to 2012 as a consultant to the UNDP Democratic Governance Group on youth participation. From 2011 to 2015, she completed the Master's program “Research Training in Social Sciences” at the Humboldt University of Berlin and received her doctorate in 2015 with a thesis on democracy promotion. She then worked as a post-doctoral researcher at the Varieties of Democracy Institute (V-Dem) at the University of Gothenburg from 2015 to 2018 and served as Deputy Chair from 2018 to 2020. From 2018 until her re-entry into the Bundestag, she was also employed as a junior professor at the University of Gothenburg.
She has been a member of the German Bundestag from 2002 to 2009 and since 2021. In December 2021, she was appointed Minister of State for Europe by the Federal Foreign Minister.
The event is co-hosted by the Center of Comparative Research on Democracy. The lecture will be in German.
