FDI Global Rounds 2024 – A Legal Experience in Berlin
From 1–4 November 2024, Berlin played host to the Global Finals of the FDI Moot, held at our Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. This edition of the competition welcomed 68 teams from around the world, engaging in a dynamic exchange of arguments on investor-state arbitration.
The case at the heart of the event involved a satellite internet company and an expropriation claim by the host State. Participants tackled complex legal challenges and intricate procedural questions, fostering a spirited yet professional atmosphere of legal discourse.
After several days of intense pleadings, the finals once again featured an all-Indian showdown for the second consecutive year. O.P. Jindal Global University triumphed over Christ University, successfully persuading a distinguished tribunal composed of Andrea Bjorklund (presiding), Richard Happ, and Shay Lakhter. The National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy claimed third place, ahead of Hidayatullah National Law University, which participated remotely before a tribunal led by Jan Šlehofer (presiding), Alicja Zielinska-Eisen, and Yirong Sun.
Participant were kind to express their appreciation for the event’s organization. A team from Universitas Airlangga shared, “The experience of the FDI Moot 2024 in Berlin was truly remarkable,” adding that they would “definitely consider studying at Humboldt University of Berlin in the future.” Similarly, a participant from Peking University remarked, “Berlin is a beautiful city, and the FDI Moot team did a wonderful job hosting the event.”
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of the event, especially to our IDR LL.M. candidates and all the dedicated volunteers who ensured everything ran smoothly throughout the competition.
To close this look back at the 2024 edition of the FDI Moot in Berlin, we thank all participants for their hard work and commitment. We hope it proved to be a rewarding experience, sharpening skills and forging connections that will serve them in their professional growth.
