English language requirements

 

Humboldt University of Berlin follows the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The required minimum level is C1.

 

The required language skills can be proved by

  1. UNIcert® II-Certificate with a minimum of 1.3,

  2. UNIcert® III-Certificate with a minimum of 3.0,

  3. Test of English for International Communication IELTS with a minimum of 6.5,

  4. Certificate in Advanced English (CAE): grade A-C,

  5. Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): grade A-C,

  6. Cambridge First Certificate in English (FCE): grade A,

  7. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL):

    • Internet-based test with a score of at least 100,
    • Paper-based test with a score of at least 600,
  8. DAAD-language certificate with a minimum grade of B overall, and with no tested skill below grade C.

 

A language certificate is not required in the following situations:

  1. the applicant has studied at a university or college in a country, in which English is an official language and the classes at this college or university were taught in English,
  2. the applicant only studied in part at such a university or college and obtained a minimum of 20 ECTS Credits while studying at those institutions,
  3. the applicant attended a school that qualifies its students to enrol at college or university and where the classes were taught in English,
  4. the applicant's native language is English.
