General Information

The Amsterdam Law School of the University of Amsterdam has a long-standing tradition of offering English-taught programmes in law. Around 1500 master students are registered in the 19 Master programmes on offer. The Law School has a strong international focus, with various English-taught Master programmes in the field of international and European law. Both students and lecturers come from all over the world, creating a true international classroom experience. Around 60 to 80% of students in most classes have an international background. Courses are often taught by leading researchers in the field who incorporate their own research in teaching where possible.

The vibrant research communities of the Amsterdam Center for International Law (ACIL) and the Amsterdam Center for European Law and Governance (ACELG) organize events that are also open to the student population. The Amsterdam Law School values experiential learning, and students in all Master programmes follow at least one course in which they apply their knowledge of the law to questions from actual practice in collaboration with other students.

The Law School is centrally located in Amsterdam at the Roeterseiland Campus, overlooking one of the many canals of the city. The modern building that houses the Law School offers excellent teaching and research facilities. The Campus is designed so as to allow students to also study together and socialize, and the area is generally student-friendly with a theater, cinema and plenty of nice restaurants and cafés just a few steps away.

Amsterdam is a city with a high standard of living, and a vibrant student life. The city is renowned for its tolerant, open and multicultural character. Foreign students can easily participate in the rich cultural and social life as English is widely spoken.

The Master International and Transnational Criminal Law and the Master International Criminal Law – Joint Programme with CLS, are selective masters: also European Lawyer Programme applicants will be subjected to a selection procedure.

Special arrangements for European Lawyer Programm Students

There are no special arrangements for ELP students in place, but there are plenty of internship opportunities in Amsterdam and The Hague, and several Master programmes allow internships to be part of the official curriculum.
