Dr. Johannes Ungerer on Private International Law, October 2022 - February 2023

The IDR LL.M. class of 2022/2023 was delighted to have Dr. Johannes Ungerer, law lecturer at the University of Oxford, as the program’s lecturer on Private International Law.

Combining the traditional in-person format with the online one, Dr. Ungerer followed a logical approach to the subject, starting with the basics of European private international Law and then focusing on the applicable European instruments related to international contracts and international torts, mainly the Rome I and Rome II Regulations.

After the introductory days, in which the specific problems of international transactions and the sources of private international law were discussed, most of the lectures were devoted to analyzing the law applicable to international contracts, working first with the UN Convention on the International Sale of Goods (CISG), and then focusing on a comprehensive analysis and discussion of the Rome I and Rome II Regulations.

Throughout the semester, Dr. Ungerer provided the class with different case studies strategically placed after selected problems were reviewed and discussed during the lectures. In these practical exercises, students were encouraged to participate and contribute to the resolution of the case, to which Dr. Ungerer then provided a clear and structured method of how to approach and solve the problems presented.

"I hope you have managed to understand how to apply the law with a good method," were Dr. Ungerer's parting words to the class as he concluded the last part of this module concerning International Torts, words that reflect very well the essence of his lectures, a rich analysis of the sources of law, always focused on giving students the necessary tools to understand how to solve in practice the different problems present in private international law, tools that will undoubtedly allow us to be better prepared when facing these issues during the course of our professional career.
