Despite major advances in educational advancement and labor force participation, women today still encounter major labor market disadvantages. Women tend to earn lower wages than men, have fewer possibilities for professional advancement, and are more likely to interrupt their careers and work fewer hours due to care responsibilities. Parenthood is a key driver of these gender inequalities. The ongoing discussion on the unequal economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on men and women shed further light on this issue and made it subject to a public debate. This presentation will therefore provide a systematic overview on the role of parenthood for the persistent labor market inequalities between men and women in Germany.
Lena Hipp is Professor of Social Structure, Work, Organizations at the University of Potsdam and Research Fellow at the WZB Berlin.
The event is part of the lecture series Landscapes of Equality. It will take place online, registration via lsi(at)rewi.hu-berlin.de.
