Prof. Dr. Gerhard Wagner

Chair of Private Law, Business Law, and Economic Analysis of Law

Prof. Dr. Gerhard Wagner has held the position of Professor of Private Law, Business Law, and Economic Analysis of Law at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin since 2013. At Humboldt-Universität, he is the founder and academic director of the English-language LL.M.-program „International Dispute Resolution“.

Before joining the Humboldt faculty, Wagner served as executive director of the Institute of Civil Procedure and Dispute Resolution at the University of Bonn. In 2003, he was a Visiting Fellow at University College in London, UK. During 2010-2011, he was Visiting Professor of Law at the University of Chicago Law School, Chicago, IL, and in 2018 Visiting Scholar at New York University School of Law. From 2009 through 2014 he also served as Professor of Fundamentals of Private Law at Erasmus University, Rotterdam, Netherlands. From 2008 through 2011 he was Honorary Professor of Law at Renmin University School of Law, Beijing, China.

Since 2025, Wagner has been a member of the American Law Institute's project group on “Civil Liability for Artificial Intelligence.” From 2015-2019 he was president of the Private Law Teachers’ Association (Zivilrechtslehrervereinigung), and from 2012-2021 Board Member of the German Institution of Arbitration (DIS). He is a member of the European Law Institute, member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, as well as a corresponding member of North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences, Humanities and the Arts. In 2013, Wagner was awarded the Prize of the Academy of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities. Since 2015, he has served as an External Academic Member of the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law in Hamburg.

Wagner has published widely in the fields of contracts, torts, litigation and arbitration.
