How to apply
In the following, you can find answers to the most frequently asked questions. Should you have further questions, do not hesitate to contact dynamint.rewi@hu-berlin.de.
Do I already have to speak German at the time of application?
No knowledge of German is required at the time of application. However, you are expected to be willing to learn German during your participation in the programme.
Can I also write my PhD thesis in English?
Yes, the PhD thesis can be written in German or English. Progress reports can be given in either language.
Which degree can I apply with?
As a rule, you must hold a Master's degree in Law or have passed the First German State Examination in Law. In individual cases, it is also possible to apply with partial results of the Master's degree (including a brief description of which results are still outstanding and when the overall degree can be expected).
Do I already need to have a supervisor at the time of my application?
No, you do not need a confirmation of supervision at the time of application, but in your application you should already name one of the professors serving as academic directors of the programme (see list of academic directors) who would be particularly suitable as a supervisor for the planned doctoral project.
Should I contact a potential supervisor beforehand?
No, it is perfectly sufficient to simply name the person you can envision as supervisor in your application.
If I am accepted to the programme, do I have to move to Berlin?
Yes, since we are a graduate college working in person, you must live in Berlin or the surrounding area.
Do I have to fulfil any other duties in addition to the PhD (e.g. teaching duties)?
No, there are no additional obligations. The only task is to write a doctoral thesis and actively participate in the programme.
How long will I be funded in this programme?
The positions are awarded for the duration of 3 years. The position is scheduled to start on the 1st of October 2025.
What is the salary?
The positions are remunerated with a 75% E13 position.
