The DFG Research Training Group ‘DynamInt’ invites PhD candidates to a two-day workshop at the Humboldt University of Berlin on 15th and 16th July 2021, in the context of the European Law School - Summer School 2021. Depending on Covid-19 related restrictions, the event will take place in person and/or online. The Doctoral Forum provides a platform for PhD candidates in the field of European Law to present their research, debate current issues, exchange ideas with other researchers and get feedback from Professors and Post-Docs in an international environment.

On the topic

Online platforms and intermediaries govern commerce and speech, exercising unprecedented influence over the market and the political discourse. The use of algorithms – managing information flows, analysing data, taking decisions, and carrying out transactions – has become an omnipresent reality which transforms capitalism and shapes 21st century society. As the world has become ever more digital, algorithms have become the central tool to govern it. Digital hereby refers to the mode of storing information, algorithmic to its very use. Machine learning, at the core of many of the most influential algorithms, has provoked enthusiasm and optimism as well as concerns for the accountability and fairness of automated systems. The European Union, passing the General Data Protection Regulation, has influenced laws and corporate practices world-wide and has established itself as a regulatory player to reckon with in the algorithmic era. Aspiring to respect pluralism among its member states while developing impactful solutions to global phenomena is one of the great contemporary challenges of the European project. The Doctoral Forum aims to address the legal issues posed by these new challenges and their impact on European integration.

The workshop

The Doctoral Forum will consist of a diverse range of events including keynote speeches, a panel of presentations by selected candidates and a poster session. The Call for Presentations can be accessed here
