CHILD MARRIAGE AND THE LAW - Monitoring the Legal Treatment of Early Marriage
Course no. (Agnes): 0212061

Alexander Holzer, research assistant at the chair of Prof. Dr. Giesela Rühl, offers a research colloquium on the topic of child marriages in the winter semester 2022/23, which is funded by the Berlin University Alliance as an X-Student Research Group. As an interdisciplinary project, the course is open to students of all disciplines. More information will be provided in an information session during the first week of the semester, which will take place on Wednesday, 19. 10. 2022, at 6.15 pm via Zoom. Further information and Zoom_access data can be found here > https://moodle.hu-berlin.de/course/view.php?id=113698

Project: The X-Student Research Group is working on recording the legal situation of child marriages worldwide. As part of the course, an internet portal will be created that provides information on foreign legislative and judicial practice regarding marriages of persons under the age of 18. Participants will establish contacts with experts from foreign jurisdictions and evaluate information on the topic. The research of the project group is to serve as a pilot project for a comprehensive information portal that documents the legal situation in most jurisdictions and will be available to authorities, courts, research institutions and human rights organisations in the future. This will provide the opportunity to acquire comparative knowledge in the fundamentals of other legal regimes.

Background: The project is supported by the Berlin University Alliance as an X-Student Research Group. The X-Student Research Groups are research groups consisting of young academics and students. Doctoral students or postdocs bring their own research into teaching within the framework of the research seminars. Up to 15 students from all disciplines of the four partners of the Berlin University Alliance (Charité, FU Berlin, HU Berlin, TU Berlin) can participate. Students receive up to 6 credit points for their participation. Under certain conditions, the project is also open to students from other institutions - this can be clarified by email.
