Invitation to The Hague Academy of International Law

Professor Giesela Rühl has been invited by the prestigious Hague Academy of International Law to deliver a course in Private International Law in the summer of 2026.
The invitation to the Hague Academy is regarded as one of the highest scholarly distinctions in the field of international law. Since introduction of the courses in 1923, only thirty scholars from Germany have been invited to lecture in the Private International Law section – all of them men. Professor Giesela Rühl will be the first woman from a German university to teach a Hague Summer Course in Private International Law.

Her course will explore how human rights are protected in global supply chains – a topic that she has been working on for a number of years. The focus will be on the role of private enforcement: Can victims of human rights violations claim damages? Do they have access to courts or other effective remedies? The course will analyze and critically examine recent case law and legislation. In addition it will, more generally, shed light on the interaction of private and public enforcement as well as public and private international law.

The program for the 2026 summer courses at The Hague Academy of International Law can be found here.
