Juristische Gesellschaft zu Berlin: Lecture by Eva-Maria Kieninger on October 09
On Wednesday, October 9, 2024, Prof. Dr. Eva-Maria Kieninger (University of Würzburg) will speak on the topic of “Climate Protection in Court” at the invitation of the Juristische Gesellschaft zu Berlin. The event will take place at 6 p.m. in the plenary hall of the Kammergericht Berlin (Elßholzstraße 30-33, 10781 Berlin). All interested guests are warmly invited!
About the topic: 2024 brought the hottest summer since weather recordings began, and in June large areas of southern Germany were under water. Climate researchers warn that the long-term costs of “business as usual” will far exceed investments in effective climate protection. Despite this, the issue has largely withdrawn from day-to-day politics. What role can or must the courts play in this situation? How can the course of the Paris Climate Agreement be enforced by the courts? Are civil lawsuits against companies an effective means, or is it more a matter of so-called “strategic litigation”, as in the case of the Peruvian Lliuya against RWE?
About the speaker: Prof. Dr. iur. Eva-Maria Kieninger studied law in Passau and London and was a research assistant in Augsburg and at the Free University of Berlin, where she received her doctorate in 1995. In 2001, she habilitated in Hamburg on the subject of “Competition between legal systems and the European internal market” and has since held the Chair of German and European Private Law and Private International Law at the University of Würzburg. She is a member of renowned academic societies, including the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities and the Akademia Europaea, and publishes on topics such as sustainability, climate liability and supply chain law.
